The town was founded in 1874, during a subdivision of Henry Tiffen's 5140-hectare Homewood farming estate. It overtook and replaced a neighbouring township, Kaikora, formed over the 1850s and 1860s, and became the centre of the Pātangata County from 1885 to 1977. The county took its name from a nearby Māori pā.[3]
In July 2020, the name of the locality was officially gazetted as Ōtāne by the New Zealand Geographic Board,[4] having previously often been written as Otane. The New Zealand Ministry for Culture and Heritage gives a translation of "place of a man" for Ōtāne.[5]
