Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov

Abdulmanap Magomedovich Nurmagomedov (Russian: Абдулмана́п Магоме́дович Нурмагоме́дов; 10 December 1962 – 3 July 2020) was a Russian athlete and coach. He was father and coach of UFC lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov.

Biography

Nurmagomedov was born in 1962 in the village of Sildi, Tsumadinsky District. In 1987 he graduated from the Poltava University of Economics and Trade with a degree in accounting and economics. He had three children: two sons and one daughter. He started his sporting career with freestyle wrestling, of which he became a master of sports; while in the Army, he began to practice judo and sambo.[1]

His first big success as a coach came when his brother, Nurmagomed Nurmagomedov, won at the World Sambo Championship for Ukraine’s national team in 1992.

In September 2019, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov was included in the Russian Book of Records as the coach who raised the largest number of combat sambo champions. He trained 18 world champions during his coaching career.[2]

At the end of April 2020, during the COVID-19 pandemic in Russia, Nurmagomedov was hospitalized in the 2nd city hospital of Makhachkala with bilateral pneumonia caused by COVID-19. On May 3, he was taken to Moscow on a special plane. On May 13, it became known that Nurmagomedov was in serious condition in one of the military hospitals in Moscow. On July 3, 2020, he died in Moscow from COVID complications at the age of 57.[3][4][5]

On July 4, he was buried in his native village.[6] Following his death, his son Khabib announced his retirement from mixed martial arts after UFC 254.[7]
