Founded in 2006, its core focus is upon the development and sale of automation hardware and software with Aeotec's product offering available from the group's own brand, Aeotec, and as white labelled goods in over 100 countries globally, growing from 83 countries in 2016.[5] Its range of products utilise the Zigbee and Z-Wave communications protocol, the latter being a technology to which Aeotec owns the European rights.[6] The group appointed a new CEO, Daniel P Dykes, in late 2018 shortly prior to acquiring German electronics maker Popp & Co., [7] a company itself founded in 1930 and also focussed on smart home hardware development. The acquisition allowed Aeotec to move both its headquarters and research-and-development operations to Germany.
Aeotec has partnerships with multiple solutions providers including Alarm.com, ADT, AT&T, Huawei, for whom Aeotec is a core connected home accessory provider,[8][9] Orange S.A., and Telefónica.[5] In December 2020, it announced a partnership with Samsung Electronics by which the group will re-brand and re-release hardware from Samsung's SmartThings subsidiary.[10]
Products
Since its founding, Aeotec has engineered and released over 200 products,[10] of which 6 products utilise Zigbee-based communication with the remainder utilising Z-Wave-based communication. The majority have been released under the company's own brand name of Aeotec and former brand name Aeon Labs, though Aeotec has operated for many years as an original equipment manufacturer and released products under the licence for third-party brands.[4] Between 2015 and 2020, Aeotec developed their home automation accessories upon a customised Z-Wave Plus platform dubbed Gen5.[11] Prior to 2015 Aeotec had utilised older versions of the Z-Wave SDK while a Gen7 successor and Zigbee products have been released for 2020 onwards.[12][10]
Such own-brand products have been designed to work with controllers such as Home Assistant, openHab, SmartThings, and Wink along with the group's own controllers AutoPilot and Smart Home Hub.[13][1]
Its range of branded hardware includes;

- MultiSensors. Many-in-one sensors that include motion detection but also offer other environmental readings in order to provide a home control system with multiple data points for automation.[14][15]
- Magnetic Sensors. Typically used upon doors or windows to determine if they have been opened or closed, within a home automation setting they are used to both understand perimeter intrusions and drive automation based upon object usage data.[16]
- Garage Door Controllers
- Energy Meters
- Key Fob
- Light Bulbs
- Remotes
- Z-Wave Range Extenders
- Sirens
- Power Strips[17]
- Outlet Switches
- Touch Panels
- Water Sensors
- In-Wall Controllers[18][19]
- Doorbells
