African Pilot

African Pilot is a monthly general aviation magazine published in South Africa since 2001.[1]

History and profile

The idea of starting an aviation magazine which had a completely new approach to the coverage of all aviation matters in South Africa was conceived at AirVenture at Oshkosh, in July 2001. The name African pilot was selected as well as the slogan of ‘Serious about flying'. The first edition was launched late 2001. In 2002, 7 magazines were published. Due to the popularity of the 7 editions the magazine eventually grew to a 100 page edition with 7000 copies produced in 2005

Online version

In 2010 the magazine launched a free electronic version which was available for download from the website. The company also has a weekly newsletter which goes out globally

Audit

The last audited sales figure were in the region of 7000 paper copies and 6754 electronic copies. Although not certified by ABC anymore they claim too have similar figures still.

Location

The company’s offices are situated in Kyalami in Midrand part of the Johannesburg region. Presently the company employs nine people and has a further 15 or so freelance writers and photographers.
