Allen J. Lauer
Allen J. Lauer retired as Chairman of Varian, Inc., a company specialized in scientific instruments and vacuum technologies. He also served as the CEO and President of Varian, Inc. from 1999 to 2003.[1]
Early life and education
He was born and raised in Berkeley, California, where he also attended high school before joining the Stanford University, in which he majored in electrical engineering,[2] after earning a bachelor’s degree, Lauer served for nearly four years in the U.S. Navy as an officer. Upon his return home, he went to the University of California, Berkeley, where he received a Master of Business Administration (MBA).
Career
Lauer joined Varian in 1965 as an engineer for ultrahigh-vacuum products. In 1981, he became an executive for Varian's worldwide instrument business, and after 8 years was promoted to senior vice president.[3] In 1999, following Varian’s split into three companies, he was appointed as Chief Executive Officer of Varian Inc.,[4][5] Lauer was named chairman of the board of directors in 2002. In 2003, Lauer announced his retirement.[6] He remained a board member until 2009.[7]
He was the chairman of Intermec from July 2007 to September 2013.[8]
He was a board member of Immunicon Corp from 2003 to 2008.
