Alnwick is a civil parish in Northumberland County, New Brunswick, Canada.[2]

For governance purposes it is divided between the village of Neguac;[3] the regional municipality of Tracadie;[4] the Indian reserves of Esgenoôpetitj 14 and Tabusintac 9; and the local service districts of Fair Isle, Oak Point-Bartibog Bridge, Tabusintac, and the parish of Alnwick,[5] which further includes the special service area of Barryville-New Jersey. Most of the parish belongs to the Acadian Peninsula Regional Service Commission (APRSC);[6] Oak Point-Bartibog Bridge and the parish of Alnwick are members of the Greater Miramichi Regional Service Commission (GMRSC).[6]; the Indian reserves do not belong to either.

Origin of name

The parish may have been named for Alnwick, county town of Northumberland, England.[7]

History

Alnwick was erected in 1786 as one of the original parishes of the county.[8] The boundaries stretched across the Big Tracadie River and inland past the bend of the Nepisiguit River but only the southeastern corner overlapped today's Alnwick Parish.[9]

In 1814 Northumberland County's parishes were reorganised[10] and Alnwick assumed its current boundaries. Part of Alnwick was included in Saumarez Parish.

Delineation

Alnwick Parish is described in the Territorial Division Act[2] as being bounded:

North by the County line; west by Bartibog River, from its mouth up to the bridge on Highway 8; thence north to the County line; and southeast by the Gulf of Saint Lawrence and Miramichi Bay, including Sheldrake Island and all the other islands in front north of the principal entrance to Miramichi Bay.
