BMW 2 Series
The BMW 2 Series is a range of subcompact executive cars (C-segment) manufactured by BMW since 2014. The 2 Series was created when BMW spun off the 2-door models (coupé and convertible) of the BMW 1 Series into a separate series. The 2 Series is currently in its second generation.

The first generation of 2 Series was launched in the coupé and convertible body styles, both based on a rear-wheel drive platform. A year later, the Active Tourer 5-seat compact MPV body style was added, based on the largely unrelated front-wheel drive platform shared with the Mini Hatch (F55/56/57). This was followed by a 7-seat version called the Gran Tourer.[1]
The second generation was introduced in 2019 in the Gran Coupe fastback sedan body style. This generation saw the 2 Series switch to the front-wheel drive platform used by the previous generation Active Tourer and the F40 1 Series hatchback range.
The BMW M2 is the high-performance version of the 2 Series. The first generation of the M2 is the F87 coupe and is powered by turbocharged straight-six engines.
First generation (F22/F23/F45/F46; 2014–present)
Coupé / Convertible (F22/F23; 2014–present)
The first generation of the BMW 2 Series consists of the following body styles:
- 2-door coupé (F22 model code)
- 2-door convertible (F23 model code)
This generation has been in production since November 2013 and is often collectively referred to as the F22. The F22 was released as the successor to the E82 1 Series coupé and E88 1 Series convertible. It is currently produced alongside the F20 1 Series hatchback range in Leipzig.[2]
The high performance F87 M2 model is produced in the coupe body style. It is powered by the BMW N55 and BMW S55 turbocharged inline-six engines.
Active Tourer / Gran Tourer (F45/F46; 2014–present)
The BMW 2 Series Active Tourer is a compact MPV, built on the front-wheel-drive BMW UKL platform.
The BMW 2 Series Gran Tourer is a long wheelbase, seven seat version, which was released in June 2015. The sixth and seventh seats can be pulled up from the floor of the cargo area.
Second generation (F44; 2019–present, G42; 2021-present)
BMW revealed a Gran Coupé variant in October 2019, built on the front-wheel drive BMW UKL platform like the Active Tourer (F45) and Gran Tourer (F46).[3] BMW are expected to release a new standard wheelbase 2-door coupe, rear-wheel drive 2 Series in 2021, "[sharing] very little of its architecture with the 2 Series Gran Coupé."
