Baker Hostel
Baker Hostel is a government hostel located in Kolkata, West Bengal, India.[1] The hostel was founded in 1910 during the British rule by Edward Norman Baker, the then Lieutenant Governor of Bengal.[2][3] The hostel is located at 5 Smith Lane in Taltala. Due to the unhygienic environment and inadequate housing system around the Taylor hostel built in 1896 for Muslim students in Kolkata, the students started a movement for the construction of a new hostel.[4] Nawab Abdul Jabbar initiated the movement in 1908.[4] Khan Bahadur Ahsanullah, A. K. Fazlul Huq played a major role in establishing the hostel.[5] As a result, government built this hostel.[4]
