Bruised (film)

Bruised is a 2020 sports film directed by Halle Berry in her feature directorial debut, from a screenplay by Michelle Rosenfarb. It stars Berry, Shamier Anderson, Adan Canto and Sheila Atim. The film had its world premiere at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2020. It will also be released on Netflix in 2021.[2]

Plot

Disgraced mixed martial arts (MMA) fighter Jackie Justice has to face one of the rising stars of the MMA world and deal with the return of her 6-year-old son to the mother he deserves.

Cast

Production

On May 15, 2017, Nick Cassavetes was to direct the mixed martial arts film Bruised written by Michelle Rosenfarb and produced by Guymon Casady, Basil Iwanyk, Linda Gottlieb, and Erica Lee.[5] Blake Lively was cast in the film.[5] On September 11, 2018, Halle Berry took over directing Bruised, making it her directorial debut, and replaced Lively in the film.[6] On December 4, 2019, Shamier Anderson and Adan Canto were cast in the film.[7] On December 16, 2019, Sheila Atim was cast in the film.[8]

Principal photography began in November 2019, in New Jersey. Filming locations included the Jim Whelan Boardwalk Hall in Atlantic City[9] and a boxing gym in Newark.[10] During filming, Berry suffered a minor injury, with filming being suspended for a few days.[10] Production resumed on November 27.[11] Production concluded on December 20, 2019.[12]

The film's score was composed by Terence Blanchard.[13]

Release

The film's world premiere was held at the Toronto International Film Festival on September 12, 2020.[14] Prior to, Netflix acquired distribution rights to the film.[15]
