The name originates from the Scottish surname Cameron. In the Scottish Highlands the surname is thought to be derived from the Gaelic cam sròn or cam abhainn, meaning "crooked nose" or "crooked river" respectively; in the Scottish Lowlands the surname indicates that the original bearer lived in either Cameron near Edinburgh, Cameron in Lennox, or Cameron in Fife. Thus, the name in the Lowlands is of territorial origin, from one of the three places mentioned.[1][2]

A variant spelling of the given name is Camron. Modern variants of the name are Kameron and Kamron,[3] and a common female variant is Camryn.[4] A shortened form of the given name Cameron is Cam.
