History

The first race meeting was on 12 December 1974. The eight race card drew more than 15,000 people to the new venue. The first race on the old venue was won by David Volo for trainer Sammy Blackburn in a time of 32.54. In April 1989 Cannington was one of the first tracks in Australia to switch to a sand-based track. The first meeting on the sand track was run on 22 April 1989. The track's next upgrade was to an above ground lure system in January 2001, ready for a race meeting on 21 January 2001.[1]

Cannington has hosted the AGRA National Championships six times (1984, 1993, 1998, 2004, 2009 and 2014). In total, Western Australia has won the National Distance Championships twice with Paradise Street winning on home soil in 1998 and Miata winning in Hobart in 2012. Western Australia has been more successful in the National Sprint Championships winning five times (Mr Toewhyte in 1978, Fremantle Echo in 1987, Sandi's Me Mum in 1989 and 1990, and Prince of Tigers in 1997).[2]

Old Cannington track

2015 rebuild

On 27 June 2015 the final race was held at the old Cannington venue with All Strung Out for Chris Halse winning the last race in a time of 30.72.[3] The old track site now has the new Bunnings Warehouse in Cannington on it. In 2014 a new track was proposed to be built behind the old track with racing distances of 275 m (902 ft), 380 m (1,250 ft), 520 m (1,710 ft), 600 m (2,000 ft) and 715 m (2,346 ft). Construction of the new track started in late 2015 and mid-2016, opening on 23 March 2016. Glass Cutter for Enzo Crudelli won the first race at the new track in a Maiden Stake over 520 m (1,710 ft) in a time of 30.67.
