History
The town and partido were established by provincial law on 21 December 1961. It was named after Domingo Fidel Sarmiento, son of former President Domingo Faustino Sarmiento. First founded by the Cruz rich family.
After a 1995 contest by the Buenos Aires Undersecretary of Culture, to select the flag that would identify the province, and having chosen the design of a group of five boys from Capitán Sarmiento, the then Governor Duhalde signed a decree declaring the town "Cradle of the Buenos Aires flag".
