Organization

The agency is currently headed by Sheriff Anthony A. "Tony" Lippa, Jr. Lippa was elected in 2003, and has been sheriff since January 1, 2004. The CCSO has been accredited by the Virginia Law Enforcement Professional Standards Commission (VLEPSC) since 2006.[1]

This agency experienced tremendous growth in the late 2000s as Caroline is some of the last undeveloped land between Richmond and Washington, D.C..

Fallen officers

Since the establishment of the Caroline County Sheriff's Office, 2 officers have died in the line of duty.

  • Sheriff Thomas G. Thornton was shot and killed June 12, 1830. His murderer was convicted and hung.
  • Deputy Strother W. "Ted" Lewis was shot and killed while interrogating a prisoner. After the murder, the assailant fled with Strother's duty weapon. He was caught and convicted. [3]


Patrol vehicles

The Caroline County Sheriff's Office utilizes primarily Dodge Chargers, but also employs other vehicles for specialized uses. They include Ford Crown Victorias, Ford pickup trucks, and an armored vehicle.
