History
Deba Ray College was established in 1982 in Nayapalli, western part of the capital city of Bhubaneswar, as a Junior college at first in a rented accommodation, which later expanded to become a degree college as a composite institution. The college was later shifted to its own building, situated on 5 acres of land. The college has been named after its founder, Dr Deba Ray, who established this institution with the co-operation of a few local enthusiasts as part of fulfilling his dreams as a child. Dr Deba Ray hales from a rural remote village, Mohanpur, which is under the undivided Cuttack district of Odisha, at the border of Jajpur and Kendrapara, where there was not even a primary school in the past, which forced young Ray to seek education in distant places while staying in hostels when he was only 7/8 years old at Sribant High School and later in Ravenshaw College and SCB Medical College, Cuttack. As a determined young man, he managed to proceed to London getting only 3 sterling pounds (£) in his pocket from the Government, resulting in him fasting for days. Because of strong inspiration, he studied hard and secured the highest qualifications, including Fellowship of The Royal Society of Tropical Medicine & Hygiene (United Kingdom), Member of The Royal College of UK among many others, and later highly paid positions in England and America. In spite of all this, Dr Ray returned to India to serve his own people and engaged himself in social and political work. Among many activities, he established high schools for boys and girls, a degree college at his native village in the undivided Cuttack district as well as this college at Bhubaneswar. Thus, the founder of this college, Dr Deba Ray, is a living legend second to none in the history of modern Odisha for the promotion of education.
