In 2006, Heleno had his first fights in the United States when he signed with International Fight League. He was a member of the Renzo Gracie Academy team. Heleno fought ten times for the promotion, ended with a record of 6 wins, 3 losses and 1 DQ loss.

In the elimination round, Heleno faced Gilberto Galvao and won by decision after two rounds.[2] After gaining entry into the house, Heleno was selected second by coach Wanderlei Silva. In his first fight for the team, Heleno faced Sérgio Moraes. He lost the fight via rear-naked choke submission in the first round.
