Dholpur–Sarmathura Railway

Dholpur–Sarmathura Railway is a 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) Narrow Gauge railway in Dholpur. Dholpur–Sarmathura Railway was sanctioned by the then Maharaja Ram Singh of the Dholpur State on December 14, 1905 and formally opened in February 1908 during British India. The route length from Sarmathura to Dholpur is 72.9 kilometres (45.3 mi) and from Dholpur to Tantpur is 60.84 kilometres (37.80 mi). Mohari is a Junction Station in Dholpur-Sarmathura Narrow Gauge Line, 38.44 kilometres (23.89 mi) Dholpur from where the trains for Tantpur is boarded by passengers. Another 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) Narrow Gauge railway line from Dholpur to Agra & Holipura. The route length from Dholpur to Agra was 76.1 kilometres (47.3 mi) & from Dholpur to Holipura was 73.2 kilometres (45.5 mi). Rajakhera was a Junction Station Dholpur-Agra Narrow Gauge Line, 37.21 kilometres (23.12 mi) from Dholpur from where the trains for Holipura was boarded by passengers.

History

Dholpur–Sarmathura Railway was sanctioned by the then Maharaja Ram Singh of the Dholpur State on December 14, 1905 and formally opened in February 1908. Another 2 ft 6 in (762 mm) Narrow Gauge railway line from Dholpur to Agra & Holipura was opened in 1910 & thus total line & track length became 207.39 kilometres (128.87 mi). Dholpur-Agra/Holipura Line was closed in 1985, while Dholpur–Sarmathura Railway kept on operating till 2015, when gauge conversion to 5 ft 6 in (1,676 mm) Broad Gauge was proposed & sanctioned. Currently, 95.30 kilometres (59.22 mi) Dholpur–Sarmathura Railway is operational .

Passenger Services

The rail initially used steam locomotives, but later diesel locomotives are used.[1] There is only one rake/train which covers to trips per day in this section. Its first trip begins in early morning at around 04:00 hrs and returns at 10:15 hrs. The second trip begins at 10:40 hrs. and ends at around 19:00 hrs. There are many halt stations in this section.

Conversion to broad gauge

The gauge conversion work of this section was started in around year 2015 but could not be completed and stopped due to political reasons. The Railways' plan was to connect the railway further 77.1 kilometres (47.9 mi) to Gangapur via Karauli.[2] which could be an alternate route also for connecting the Jhansi and Gangapur.

Railway Administration

This section is under the control of Assistant Divisional Engineer of North Central Railway who is headquartered at Dholpur. He is assisted by a Permanent Way Supervisor and Works Supervisor. All maintenance of all the track and works comes under administrative control. Generally a Group-'A' officer of Engineering Services Examination is posted at this post.
