Background

Esther, who is originally from Durham, and her partner Dan Colegate had hiked around Europe since 2014, recording their experiences in a blog.[1] They started their journey after Colegate nearly died during surgery.[1] They had been profiled by the BBC in an article published on 22 November 2020.[3]

Disappearance

She had been travelling on a month-long solo trip while her partner stayed in Gascony.[1] She had last contacted him via WhatsApp on 22 November 2020 while on top of Pic de Sauvegarde.[1] The previous day she had walked from Benasque in Spain and had planned to spend the night in Refuge VĂ©nasque in France.[1] She was reported missing on 25 November, the day she was due to return from her solo trip.[4][5][2]

The Peloton de Gendarmerie de Haute Montagne confirmed that they were searching for her.[1] Search teams and a helicopter were deployed to search for her.[6] Her partner has gone to Luchon to take part in the search for her.[6]

A witness has claimed to have seen someone sleeping in the camper van belonging to Esther Dingley ten days after she disappeared.[7]

In early December authorities announced that the search for her had halted due to heavy snow.[4][5]

Her family is being supported by LBT Global, formerly known as the Lucie Blackman Trust.[2]
