Drsnik, Kosovo

Drsnik (Serbian Cyrillic: Дрсник), or Dërsnik or Dresnik (Albanian: Dërsniku or Dresniku), is a settlement in the Klina municipality of Kosovo.[2] During Early Middle Ages, Porphyrogenitus mentions the urban center of Desstinik.[3] Archaeological discoveries from the Roman period were made here in August 2013.[4]

Drsnik had a Serbian majority. In June 1999 the Serbian population fled due to war. Some Serbs returned to the village after five years, on June 2005.[5] The interior of the church of St. Paraskeva, which dates back to the 16th century, was completely torched in June 1999. Some frescoes survived the fire; in 2005 funds were being collected for the church's repair and a restoration of the frescoes.[5]

In 2009 there were arson attacks on two Serbian houses in Drsnik.[6]

Population

In the 2011 census, the population was 1770.[7]

Previous census figures may not have been accurate. Data for 1991 may not reflect the correct number of Albanians that year, as they largely boycotted that census.

  1. Kosovo is the subject of a territorial dispute between the Republic of Kosovo and the Republic of Serbia. The Republic of Kosovo unilaterally declared independence on 17 February 2008. Serbia continues to claim it as part of its own sovereign territory. The two governments began to normalise relations in 2013, as part of the 2013 Brussels Agreement. Kosovo is currently recognized as an independent state by 98 out of the 193 United Nations member states. In total, 113 UN member states recognized Kosovo at some point, of which 15 later withdrew their recognition.
