Fourth Reich (New Zealand gang)

The Fourth Reich was a white supremacist gang formed in 1994 in a Christchurch prison and active on the West Coast and Nelson.[1][2]

In 1997, two members killed a young Māori man, Hemi Hutley. They beat him unconscious, dragged him across wasteland, stripped him and then threw him into the Buller river where he drowned.[3][4] For several years after this the gang was said to be "terrorising members of the community with threats, intimidation and violence".[5] They were later involved in the murders of Janis Bamborough[6] in 1999, and Korean tourist Jae Hyeon Kim in 2003;[7] and in Nelson blew up a car outside the Lost Breed clubhouse, sparking a turf war.[4]

In 2011, co-founder Malcolm Chaston was convicted of the murder of Christchurch woman Vanessa Pickering, and sentenced to life in prison.[8]
