Gideon Meir
Gideon Meir (Hebrew: גדעון מאיר) is an Israeli diplomat.
Born in Jerusalem, he served in the Israel Defense Forces 1965–1967. He worked as Consul and Administration Officer for the Israeli Embassy in Washington, D.C. and was a member of the negotiating team that drafted Israel's peace treaty with Egypt. As Director of the Training Division in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, his responsibilities included training of diplomats.[1]
Until November 2006, Meir served as Deputy Director-General for media and public affairs in the Israeli Foreign Ministry. Previously he was Minister Plenipotentiary (DCM-Deputy Chief of Mission) at the Israeli embassy in London. In 2006–2011, he was Israeli ambassador to Italy[2] and Malta. On 24 November 2019, the former diplomat sparked controversy, Holocaust distortion and victim blaming by writing that "Germans wouldn’t have built the camps in Poland without the corporation [sic] of the polish [sic] people" on the social media platform Twitter.[5]
