Life and career

Son of a German mother and Italian father[17] he began to study acting and directing in his hometown[18] when he was a teenager during a workshop with Susan Strasberg.[19] At 18 years old he moved[20] to New York City to study in deep the work of the realistic school of acting. First he started as an intern at the Actors Studio,[21] auditing and observing the sessions for one year and eventually becoming a student of Salem Ludwig at the HB studio. In 2001 he met John Strasberg, son of Lee Strasberg, with whom he has been studying and collaborating as a coordinator for his workshops[22] in Italy and lately also in Berlin. He wrote the preface[23] of the Italian version[24] of Strasberg´s book Accidentally on purpose[25] published by Dino Audino in 2016. While living and studying in America,[26] Giovanni worked as an actor[27] in several productions[28] directed by Ellen Stewart,[29] founder of La Mama e.t.c., Ted Mornel,[30] Kathleen M. Wilce,[31] and Gus Van Sant.[32] In 2004 he returned to Italy where, after graduating from the National Film School in Rome directed by actor Giancarlo Giannini, he was cast[33] in several roles in theatre, film,[34] and television.[35] As a Theatre director he has been directing Sola in casa[36] (Alone at home) by Dino Buzzati starring Lydia Biondi and presented at[37] the Cherry Lane Theatre in 2012 and Madre sin Panuelo[38] by Jorge Palant sponsored by the Argentinian Embassy and presented in Rome and Milan in the fall of 2015. In 2016 he moved to Berlin where he was cast in For the time being[39] directed by Daniela Lucato that was presented at the 71st edition of the Cannes Film Festival. Morassutti is also a contributing artist of the Transversal Theater Company having performed both male leads[40][41] in Railroad, winner of the Tor Vergata Award[42] at the 28th Annual Festival Internazionale del Teatro Patologico directed by Dario D'Ambrosi in 2020 and he is part of the team of The Lonely Child,[43] collaborating with filmmakers, producers and musicians[44] including klezmer singer Michale Alpert. As a film actor is competing for the David di Donatello award[45] in 2021 for his supporting role in Affittasi Vita directed by Stefano Usardi.

Cultural entrepreneurship and artistic practice

Giovanni Morassutti is the founder[46] and artistic director[47] of Art Aia - Creatives / In / Residence which is an international art residency[48] promoting artistic production and research that focuses on the development of the creative process and facilitates cultural exchange across borders.[49] In the past few years he invited to work at the residency international teaching artists like John Strasberg and Italo-Palestinian artist Mustafa Sabbagh who thought a photography masterclass[50] in 2014. He also hosted several artist collectives like Marsala 11[51] and the Institut für Alles Mögliche of Berlin[52] among others supporting them in the development of their work with exhibitions[53] and open studios. In 2016 Giovanni Morassutti founded in Berlin, Art Aia-La Dolce Berlin,[54] which is a project space that shares many crossovers with the Italian headquarters including a facilitation of cultural activities and an interest in cultural research and artistic experimentation. Several artists and artist collectives have been hosted in the Berlin affiliation space including Wyatt Mills[55] (USA), Roger Thorp[56] (UK) and Kaoru Shibuta[57] (JPN). Giovanni Morassutti is also an experimental visual artist.[58] While in Berlin he realized a collection of artworks[59] pairing wine with contemporary art.[60]

Giovanni Morassutti is involved in environmental issues[61] by developing programs at his art residency in Friuli Venezia Giulia[62] to raise people consciousness about topics like global warming and climate change, fostering art practices concerning ideas of ecology and sustainability.[63] In 2020, he curated some online exhibitions[64] for a global audience to increase cultural tourism. He promoted and preserved[65] the natural attractions of his home region and its local community.[66]Morassutti offers to international artists [67]in residence the possibility to discover the characteristic of the territory,[68] with a specific focus on the natural beauties of the environment and its biodiversity.[69]
