Hospital Show

Hospital Show is a Canadian comedy web series about the loveable, deluded, often wounded actors who play TVs most respected doctors on a hit primetime medical drama called Critical Condition. The series was created, written, directed, produced and edited by Adam Greydon Reid, and tells the story of a dysfunctional family of fake surgeons.[1] In the centre of this petri dish of dysfunction is the whip-smart Charlie Nielson (Sara Canning), a medical school dropout come actress who was on track to become a respected doctor, but instead, now plays one on TV.

The short form series premiered in late 2019 on YouTube in ten 5-7 minute chapters,[2] and Telus's Optik streaming platform in its feature length form.[3]

The show's cast includes Reid, Adrian Holmes, Jordan Connor, Enid-Raye Adams, Valerie Tian, Nhi Do, Lynda Boyd, Kaylayla Raine and Kristin Lehman.

Hospital Show received two Canadian Screen Award nominations at the 8th Canadian Screen Awards in 2020, for Best Lead Performance in a Program or Series Produced for Digital Media (Canning) and Best Supporting Performance in a Program or Series Produced for Digital Media (Reid).[4] Hospital Show was the winner of the Best Web/TV series at the 2020 Florence Film Awards Competition.

Plot

In season 1, we meet our cast a few years into their network run and discover Charlie Nielson (the show's de facto medical consultant and co-star) wants off the ride. She's had enough of working with a heap of unbalanced, fevered egos and a show runner fixated on the bounce of her breasts. She wants to be a real doctor, not pretend to be one. But T.S. Eliot called it, and by the end of Charlie's exploring, she arrives where she started, only to know the place for the very first time. After saving her co-star's (Will) life from a deadly shrimp (he's anaphylactic) Charlie becomes the real doctor she had always hoped to be and realizes she doesn't want to pull the chute on this Hospital Show just yet - because within these lofty studio walls, Charlie has found her tribe.

  • Chapter 1: "Number One" - Charlie Nielson is a med-school dropout who, instead of becoming a real doctor, now pretends to be one on TV - and she's getting tired of faking it.
  • Chapter 2: "Droopy" - "Critical Condition"'s showrunner, Rosanna, thinks Charlie's scrubs make everything look "droopy; an act of courage and chutzpah from the on-set wardrobe woman impresses, inspires, and terrifies Charlie; and Will needs to prove he's still a good fake surgeon.
  • Chapter 3: "Not That Kind of Ball" - Rich has got something on a ball...not the bouncing kind, and Charlie refuses to diagnose him; Carol-Ann doesn't want a buffet; Vince receives a secret surprise envelope to open in front of his followers; and Will needs bananas. Direct Link:

  • Chapter 7: "Butt Flies" - The cast hits Hair and Makeup; Charlie wants to be a real doctor; and Vince gets angry faces on his feed.
  • Chapter 8: "New Zealand's For Pussies" - Vince steps on Astrid's surprise; Will's patient dies; and Charlie meets a real doctor.
  • Chapter 9: "Kiss Her" - Rich tries to kiss Charlie again...and again; Dr Richardson is a man of many talents; and Charlie finally pulls the chute.
  • Chapter 10: "Not Dead Yet" - In the finale, the actor-doctors save a real life; Charlie gets respect; and all's well that ends...or begins well.
