Howard Ashley

Howard Ashley (H.L. Ashley) was a Scottish architect practicing in Malaya since 1952. He has worked for the Public Works Department of Malaysia for 11 years.[1]

Honours and awards

Ashley was awarded the Pan Pacific Award citation; he considers this award more as an honour to the country than a personal one. He received this award for "significant contributions" in the field of architecture. This was the first time an architect from Malaysia had won this award, which is given by the American Institute of Architects.[2]

Buildings

He worked on the following buildings:

  • National Mosque of Malaysia

He worked on the National Mosque of Malaysia with three Malaysian architects, Ikmal Hisham Albakri, Baharuddin Kassim, and Kow Tat Cheong.[3]

  • Federal Building of Petaling Jaya

He also worked on the Federal Building of Petaling Jaya with another architect, S.P.C. Merer.

The building is located in the heart of Petaling Jaya. It is the place where citizens go to register their IC (Identification Cards, AKA MyKad) for their children when they hit the age of 12 years. It is compulsory for every Malaysian to get their MyKad as it serves as an identification for officers to differentiate the locals and non-locals.
