J. F. O. Mustapha

James Francis O. Mustapha was a Ghanaian academic and neurosurgeon. He is credited for introducing neurosurgery in Ghana.[1] Mustapha was one of the earliest African neurosurgeons practising in Sub-Saharan Africa, he was the first African member of the International Society of Surgeons.[2][3][4] He was a member of the African Association of Neurological Science and a faculty member of the University of Ghana Medical School.[5]

He studied at the Accra Academy where he was the head prefect for the 1950 academic year. He then proceeded to the United Kingdom to study at the University of London graduating with his bachelor of medicine and bachelor of surgery certificate; MB, BS (London).[6]

He was a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons and one of the founding fathers of the Pan African Association of Neurological Sciences (PAANS). He was president of the Association from 1988 to 1990. He also served as chief of neurosurgery at the National Neurosurgical Centre of the Ghana Medical School.[7]

He died on 8 March 1997.[2][8]
