John and the Hole

John and the Hole is a 2021 American drama film directed by Pascual Sisto and written by Nicolás Giacobone. The film stars Charlie Shotwell, Jennifer Ehle, Michael C. Hall, Taissa Farmiga and Ben O'Brien. The film revolves around a 13-year-old boy who discovers a hole in his family's backyard.

Plot

A coming of age psychological thriller that plays out the unsettling reality of a kid (Charlie Shotwell) who holds his family captive in a hole in the ground.[3][4]

Production

The film is the directing debut of Pascual Sisto, and was written by Nicolás Giacobone.[5][6] The film is the first screen adaptation of Giacobone's novel El Pozo.[7]

Principal photography for the film took place in Lexington, Lincoln and Norwood (Massachusetts). Filming began on October, 2019 and lasted 23 days.[8]

Release

The film was part of the official selection for the 2020 Cannes Film Festival. The festival did not take place in its physical form due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[9][2] On a social network, Pascual Sisto confirmed that the film's release was postponed to 2021.[10] In November 2020, appears at Sundance Wish List by IndieWire with the expected releases for Sundance Film Festival 2021.[11] The following month, Pascual Sisto is named by Variety as one of the ten directors to watch for 2021.[12]

In January 2021, it appears on TheWraps, Screen Daily's, Hollywood Reporter's and Deadlines list of the most popular films on sale at the Sundance Festival.[13][14][15][16] John and The Hole also appeared on GQs (Mexico),[17] Vogue's (which was reported in Italy and the United States) and, again, on IndieWires list as one of the most anticipated films.[18][19][20]
