Kanajar is a small town approximately 78 km north of Mangalore, 18 km west of Karkala and 33 km east of Udupi. Kanajar is part of Karkala Taluk in Udupi District, Karnataka - 574102, India.

Local places and Transportation

Road here in Kanajar are too poor. Road connecting bailur to palli through Kanajar is totally in bad condition. The road was last constructed back to 2007, which went bad 2 months later. Later it was just patched. At present locals are totally upset and angry whereas some have pasted a poster " ROAD OR HELL" around the village. Road connecting Kanajar and Hiriyangadi is also partially bad.

Everyday around 20 buses take trip trice a day, several trucks use this road, school buses of NITTE College, Yenepoya College, Christ King, Green Park, Jnanasuda Educational institutions use this road. Around 2000 - 3000 families use this road, but still in a very bad condition.

Our Lady of Lourdes Church, Kanajar

Kanajar Church is a Roman Catholic Church dedicated to Our Lady of Lourdes. Kanajar Church surrounded by Moodubelle, Nakre, Hirgan, Manipal and Karkal parishes.[2]

Lourdes Higher Primary School, Kanajar

W.A. Lewis started the higher elementary school in 1939. Lourdes Higher Primary School - Kanajar provides primary education to the children in and around of Kanajar. Culture

Most of the popular Indian festivals are celebrated in Kanajar, the most important being Christmas, Diwali, Easter, Eid, and Ganesh Chaturthi.

Kanajar Church celebrates annual festival in the first week of December and parish titular feast is celebrated on 11 February.[7]

Brahmalingeshwara temple Kanajar celebrates annual festivities (utsava) in the last week of December every year.

Economy

The economy of Kanajar is mainly due to coconut tree plantation and products of coconut, rice production, jasmine flowers and workers who earn daily wages. However to a large extent the economy is also supported by the large number of expatriates who are working abroad, especially Gulf region in the Middle East. Kanajar is fast producing young adults with higher educational degrees. The remittance of the Kanajar residents working abroad is the main source for the prosperity in the region.
