Lassen Pack
The Lassen Pack is the only known wolf family in California.[1] First confirmed in the fall of 2016,[2] the first breeding male of the Lassen Pack was CA-08M,[3] son of OR-7[1] from Oregon's Rogue Pack.[4] OR-7 was the first documented wolf to visit the state since 1924 having crossed the border into northern California in late December 2011. The Lassen Pack is only the second pack of grey wolves within California since the 1920s,[2] the former being the Shasta Pack who appears to have disappeared.[5][2] Most of the pack's activity has been tracked across the western parts of Lassen County, and the northernmost part of Plumas County.[6]
The two breeding pair (CA-08M and his mate) had four pups in 2017, five pups in 2018, and four pups in 2019. CA-08M had not been detected with the pack since spring 2019. A black-colored adult male is the new breeding male who began traveling with the pack as early as June 2019.[6] The pack with expanded with eight pups in 2020. As of August 2020, the new pups join their parents and four older half siblings making a pack of 14.[5]
