This is a list of college swimming and diving teams that compete in the NCAA or NAIA Men's and/or Women's Swimming and Diving Championships.

- Notes
- California State University, Bakersfield is leaving the Western Athletic Conference for the Big West Conference on June 1, 2020. The BWC does not sponsor swimming. It has not been announce which conference the CSUB will be swimming in.
- La Salle University will drop men's swimming after the 2020-21 school year.
- Michigan State University will drop men's & women's swimming & diving after the 2020-21 season.
- University of Connecticut will drop men's swimming after the 2020-21 school year.
- University of Iowa will drop men's & women's swimming & diving after the 2020-21 season.
- University of Miami only participates in men's diving.
- Western Kentucky University announced on April 14, 2015 that it would suspend its men's and women's swimming & diving teams for at least 5 years. This followed a police investigation into claims of assault and hazing by a former men's team member which in turn found multiple violations of university policies on harassment and sexual misconduct.
- Bellarmine University began the transition from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I in the 2020–21 school year, moving from GLVC to the Atlantic Sun Conference, and placing swimming in the CCSA starting in the 2020–21 season.
- California Baptist University began transitioning out of the NCAA Division II Pacific West Conference in the 2018-19 season and will become a full D-I member in the 2022–23 school year.
- Dixie State University began the transition from NCAA Division II to NCAA Division I in the 2020–21 school year, moving from the Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference to the Western Athletic Conference.
- Merrimack College began transitioning out of the NCAA Division II Northeast-10 Conference in the 2019–20 season and will become a full D-I member in the 2023–24 school year.
- The University of California, San Diego moved to Division I in 2020, joining the Big West Conference for most sports, with full D-I membership in 2024–25. It is maintaining its MPSF membership in swimming & diving, which is not sponsored by the Big West for either men or women.
- The University of St. Thomas, which is being expelled from its longtime NCAA Division III home of the MIAC at the end of the 2020–21 school year, will join the Summit League starting in the 2021–22 season. St. Thomas has received an NCAA waiver allowing it to move directly from Division III to Division I.

- Bellarmine University will start the transition to NCAA Division I in the 2020-21 school year. They will switch to the Atlantic Sun Conference and swimming in the CCSA in the 2020-21 season.
- Limestone College will join the South Atlantic Conference for the 2020-21 school year. SAC does not sponsor swimming it is expected that the swim teams will have a membership with Conference Carolinas or Bluegrass Mountain Conference.
- University of California, San Diego will move to Division I in 2020, joining the Big West Conference for most sports. It will maintain its MPSF membership in swimming & diving, swimming not sponsored by the Big West.
- University of North Carolina at Pembroke is moving to Conference Carolinas starting in the 2021-22 season.
- College of Staten Island will started the transition to Division II in the 2019-20 season, joining the East Coast Conference for most sports. Swimming & diving is not sponsored by the ECC, it will maintain its METS membership.
- Frostburg State University will complete the transition to Division II in the 2022-23 season.

- Cazenovia College and State University of New York at Cobleskill are moving to the North Atlantic Conference for the 2020-21 season. However NAC does not sponsor swimming and NEAC is dropping swimming in the 2020-21 season. It has not been announce where either team will swim.
- Johns Hopkins University is a charter member of the Centennial Conference but has never attended the conference championship. They are often referred to as Independent.
- Neumann University announced the addition of swimming and diving for the 2016-17 season but is yet to have their inaugural season.
- Plymouth State University is adding Men's swimming and diving for the 2020-21 school year.
- St. Norbert College will switch to the Northern Athletics Collegiate Conference in the 2020-21 season. However, NACC does not sponsor swimming and diving, it has not been announced which conference St. Norbert will compete in.
- Southern Virginia University will switch to the USA South Athletic Conference in the 2021-22 season. However, USASAC does not sponsor swimming and diving and CAC is dropping swimming in the 2020-21 school year, it has not been announced which conference SVU will compete in.
- University of Rochester has dual membership to both the University Athletic Association and Liberty League. However Rochester only competes at the UAA conference championship.
NAIA
- Notes
- University of British Columbia and University of Victoria hold concurrent memberships in U Sports and NAIA. They are not members of an NAIA conference that sponsors swimming.
