"On Feb. 9, 1843, the office of Mayor was abolished by a special act of the Legislature in 1843, the president of the commom council administered mayoral duties until the city was incorporated in 1853. Under the new constitution of the State of Indiana, a General Law was approved on June 18, 1852, providing for the incorporation of cities."[1]

Convicted of bribery in 1915 and spent three and a half years in prison; convicted of embezzlement in 1936 and sentenced to prison. Released from prison following a heart attack, and died a few days later, in Terre Haute, Vigo County, Ind., August 3, 1936. Interment at St. Joseph's Cemetery, Terre Haute, Ind.
