Marcin Białobrzeski

Marcin Białobrzeski (1530-1559) was a 16th-century Polish bishop, bibliophile, author, theologian, and preacher, born c. 1530 in Białobrzegi (now in Tomaszów Mazowiecki) into the Abdank noble family.[1][2] He took religious vows in the Cistercian Monastery in Sulejów and was educated at the expense of the monastery in Krakow Academy of Literature.[3][4][5][6]

Marcin Białobrzeski

He was a relative of Andrzej Spot, after whose death in 1559 Białobrzeski was elected as an abbot and in 1565 assistant at Krakow, and in 1571 joined the cathedral chapter.

He was active in the Catholic Church. He was a representative of the clergy in 1573 at the Sejm and, after the coronation of Henry of Valois as King of Poland on 13 February 1574, Białobrzeski delivered an oration at the funeral of Sigismund August. After the escape of Henry Valois from Poland, he sided with the Habsburgs. In March 1576, Białobrzeski went with Krzysztof Lanckoroński to Vienna on an embassy to Emperor Maximilian, to tell him about the newly elected King, Stefan Bathory. On April 7, 1576, he greeted Stefan Batory at Mogiła Abbey. Shortly afterward, Białobrzeski was installed to the see of Kamieniec-Podolsk. Along with Łukasz Podoski, a canon of Kraków Cathedral, he participated in the 1557 Synod, in Northern Poland, and a year later the one in Jędrzejów.

In 1580 Białobrzeski went to Rome on a diplomatic mission and was the King's representative at the funeral of his brother, Christopher Báthory. In 1585 Sejm, he was an opponent of the Samuel Zborowski side. Białobrzeski died on April 19, 1586 in Kraków, where he was buried.
