Early life and education
Xie was born in Jiangsu, China, to parents who were both secondary school teachers. He attended Changzhou Senior High School (1978–1980) and then Shanghai Jiao Tong University (1980–1984) where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in engineering mechanics.[1] Later he studied at Swansea University (1987–1991) from which he received the PhD degree in computational mechanics under the supervision of Olgierd Zienkiewicz.[1]
Career
Xie migrated to Australia in 1991. He joined the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Sydney in 1992 where he carried out the early research on the evolutionary structural optimization (ESO) method which has became a popular method used in topology optimization.[2] He was appointed a lecturer at Victoria University in 1993 and promoted to senior lecturer in 1995, associate professor in 1998 and professor in 2002.[1] He joined RMIT University in 2002 and served as professor and head of civil engineering discipline for the next 10 years. He founded the Centre for Innovative Structures and Materials at RMIT University in 2012 and was appointed an RMIT Distinguished Professor in 2016.[1]
Honours
- He was elected a Fellow of the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering in 2011.[3]
- In 2017, he received the Clunies-Ross Award from the Australian Academy of Technology and Engineering.[4] In the same year, he was awarded the AGM Michell Medal by Engineers Australia.[5]
- He was awarded the Australian Laureate Fellowship in 2019 by the Australian Research Council.[6]
- In the 2019 Queen’s Birthday Honours List, he was appointed a Member of the Order of Australia (AM), for "significant service to higher education, and to civil engineering".[7]
- He was awarded the Victoria Prize for Science and Innovation in 2020.[8]
