Mike Xie

Yi Min “Mike” Xie AM FTSE (Chinese: 谢亿民; born 1963) is a Chinese-Australian researcher and engineer. He is an Australian Laureate Fellow, a Distinguished Professor and the Director of the Centre for Innovative Structures and Materials at RMIT University.[1]

Early life and education

Xie was born in Jiangsu, China, to parents who were both secondary school teachers. He attended Changzhou Senior High School (1978–1980) and then Shanghai Jiao Tong University (1980–1984) where he obtained his bachelor’s degree in engineering mechanics.[1] Later he studied at Swansea University (1987–1991) from which he received the PhD degree in computational mechanics under the supervision of Olgierd Zienkiewicz.[1]

Career

Xie migrated to Australia in 1991. He joined the Department of Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Sydney in 1992 where he carried out the early research on the evolutionary structural optimization (ESO) method which has became a popular method used in topology optimization.[2] He was appointed a lecturer at Victoria University in 1993 and promoted to senior lecturer in 1995, associate professor in 1998 and professor in 2002.[1] He joined RMIT University in 2002 and served as professor and head of civil engineering discipline for the next 10 years. He founded the Centre for Innovative Structures and Materials at RMIT University in 2012 and was appointed an RMIT Distinguished Professor in 2016.[1]
