Monique Péan

Monique Péan (born c. 1981) is an American designer focused on fine jewelry and objects,[2][3][4] based in New York City.[5][6]

Early life and education

Péan born in Washington, D.C. and raised in Great Falls, Virginia.[7] Her Haitian-born father was a senior economist at the World Bank and a consultant at the United Nations Development Program. Péan visited 20 countries as child with her father, including Egypt, Israel, Turkey and Bulgaria.[8] Péan's mother, a painter of impressionistic landscapes and portraits in oil, is Jewish of Russian and Polish descent.[5] Péan attended an international school in Washington, and earned her Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy, Political Science and Economics from the University of Pennsylvania in 2003.[9]

Career

Before launching her first jewelry line in 2006, she worked as an analyst on the fixed income desk at Goldman Sachs in New York City.[10]

Monique Péan launched her eponymous environmentally friendly fine jewelry and object practice known for its one-of-a-kind designs, sculptural aesthetic and unique materials, including sustainable fossilized walrus ivory,[11] and fossilized dinosaur bone[12] and meteorite specimens[13] in 2006.[5][14]

In 2009, Péan moved her brand to a studio to Manhattan's Meatpacking District. In 2014, she moved her studio to a three-level space in SoHo, with a dedicated space for private appointments for the brand's growing collector base.[15] Her designs have been worn by Michelle Obama, Natalie Portman, Gwyneth Paltrow, Kerry Washington, Reese Witherspoon, Naomi Watts,[16] Gisele Bündchen, Lupita Nyong'o,[17] Emma Watson,[18] Jennifer Lawrence, Karlie Kloss,[19] Constance Jablonski,[20] Jessica Chastain,[21] Liya Kebede,[22] Joan Smalls, Bérénice Bejo and Rachel Weisz,[10] Emma Stone,[23] Rebecca Hall,[24] Gemma Chan, Sarah Paulson,[25] Renee Elise Goldsberry,[26] Mahershala Ali, Michelle Monaghan[27] and John Legend.[28]

In 2016, Péan was invited to design all the fine jewelry pieces in the film “La La Land,” working closely with director Damien Chazelle, Mary Zophres, and Emma Stone.[29]

In 2018, Péan presented her newest body of work of fine jewelry and objects: the VAAS series at PAD London Art + Design and also at Design Miami at Art Basel Miami Beach.[14][30]

Monique Péan's work has been featured at art and design fairs and galleries around the world including Miami Basel,[6] PAD Art + Design,[31] Object and Thing,[32] as well as Jessica Silverman Gallery and Tayloe Piggot Gallery.[33]

Philanthropy

Péan strives to raise awareness of art, culture and global environmental issues through design. Proceeds from sales contribute to global philanthropic organizations such as charity: water, which provides clean drinking water and basic sanitation to people in developing nations.[2][5][34] Since 2006, Péan has entirely funded the construction of clean water (and sanitation) projects in Malawi, Ethiopia, Nepal, Haiti, Mali, Nepal, India and Cambodia.[34][35]

Additional affiliations

Péan has lectured at Harvard Business School, the University of Pennsylvania, Illinois Institute of Art, Parsons The New School for Design, and The Metropolitan Museum of Art.[9][36] She is a member of the women's council of Dia Art Foundation.[5] In 2016, Péan designed a capsule collection of fine jewelry, honoring artist Walter De Maria, proceeds of which went to support the Dia Foundation and its programming.[37][38]

Awards

In 2009, Péan was named runner-up for the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Award.[39] In the same year, she was the recipient of the Ecco Domani Fashion Foundation Award.[10] In 2010 Péan won the CFDA Lexus Eco Challenge for Sustainable Design, and in 2011 she was the recipient of the CFDA Vogue Fashion Fund and Tiffany & Co. development grant.[40][41] In 2011, Fast Company named Monique Péan one of the “10 Most Innovative Fashion Companies”. Monique was named one of Marie Claire's “Women on Top Awards: The Transformers” in 2012 and one of Fast Company's “Most Creative People in Business 1000” in 2014. She received the CFDA/Vogue Fashion Fund Kate Spade Marketing Grant in 2013, enabling her to launch her first advertising campaign in the September 2014 issue of Vogue Magazine. In 2015, Monique Péan was selected as the Best Jewellery by Wallpaper in their February Design Awards issue. In 2020, Monique Péan was awarded Best Sustainable Jewelry by Town and Country Magazine.[42]
