Early life
The Montoya Twinz are identical twin sisters born in Clovis, New Mexico on September 12, 2000. While they were born in Clovis, New Mexico, the twins were raised and spent much of their childhood and teenage years in Amarillo, Texas. During the duo's teenage years, Mya, Myka, and their parents, Andres and Joanne Montoya, began splitting much of their time between Amarillo and Los Angeles, California due to Mya and Myka wanting to pursue the many more career opportunities available in the Los Angeles area that weren't available in the Amarillo area.[1][2]
Career
The Montoya Twinz started making YouTube videos in 2016. Mya and Myka produce and edit their own YouTube videos. Prior to creating content on YouTube, the twins first discovered the idea of creating their own videos through Myka accidentally downloading the app Musically thinking that it was a music listening app much like Pandora or Spotify instead of being an app where users create and share short lip-sync videos.[3][4] After this discovery and spending a decent amount of time creating content on Musically, Mya and Myka decided that it was the right time and moved over to creating content on YouNow. After spending some time creating content on YouNow, Mya and Myka were persuaded by supporters to create content on YouTube. The Montoya Twinz decided to give it a shot, liked it in the end, and have been creating content on the website almost weekly since October 29, 2016. Their first YouTube video was titled "Q&A//MontoyaTwinz."[5] Since creating their YouTube channel, the twins have made a few appearances on AwesomenessTV videos, have participated in a few Famous Birthday videos, and have even collaborated with Team 10 members Jake Paul and Justin Roberts in a few videos, among many other feats.[6][7][8] In January 2020, the twins were nominated for Best YouTube Ensemble at the 12th Shorty Awards. On March 10, 2020, the twins were announced as finalists for Best YouTube Ensemble at the 12th Shorty Awards.[9]
In June 2020, the Montoya Twinz, with support from their family and supporters, launched their own Twitch streaming channel where the girls play numerous video game titles such as Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Grand Theft Auto V, and Among Us to name a few.[10] The girls also try very hard to spend some time talking and listening to their fans before and after each Twitch live stream.
In July 2020, the Montoya Twinz released a line of official merchandise through Bonfire, "a free online platform where anyone can design, sell, and buy custom products."[11][12]
In September 2020, the Montoya Twinz announced that they were going to participate in the 2020 FaZe Clan Recruitment Challenge. On September 18, 2020, the twins submitted their first 2020 FaZe Clan Recruitment Challenge video submission.[13] On October 23, 2020, it was announced that the Montoya Twinz were selected to be part of the Top 100 Finalists in the 2020 FaZe Clan Recruitment Challenge.[14] On October 28, 2020; November 1, 2020; and November 9, 2020, respectively, the twins submitted three more 2020 FaZe Clan Recruitment Challenge video submissions as part of the Top 100 Finalists portion of the challenge.[15][16][17] On November 29, 2020, it was announced that the Montoya Twinz were selected to be part of the Top 20 Finalists in the 2020 FaZe Clan Recruitment Challenge.[18] On December 11, 2020, the Montoya Twinz submitted their first video submission of the 2020 FaZe Clan Recruitment Challenge Top 20 Finalists portion of the challenge.[19]
