Nazarbayev Center

Nazarbayev Center (Kazakh: Назарбаев орталығы, Russian: Назарбаев центр) is a multifunctional scientific, analytical, humanitarian and educational public institution in Kazakhstan.

History

The Nazarbayev Center was established by a decree of the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan on January 23, 2012, as a multifunctional research and educational public institution.

The Nazarbayev Center is dedicated to advancing research and broadening the information available on the history of statehood of Kazakhstan. The center works to strengthen the principles of civic identity and patriotism in Kazakh society and to foster interaction and cooperation between state bodies, institutions of science and culture, civil society, and the media on the popularization of the country's history. The center promotes Kazakhstan's active international cooperation in the political, social, and humanitarian sectors and seeks to enhance Kazakhstan's place and role in the global community. The center is run by acting Director Kassymbekov Mahmud Bazarkulovich and Deputy Director Eskendirov Meir Garipollaevich. It is located in Astana, the capital and second largest city of Kazakhstan.

Institute of statehood, security and development

Institute of statehood, security and development is one of the most important departments of The Nazarbayev Center. The mission of the institute is strengthening and deepening of the modern fundamental research of history of the statehood of the Republic of Kazakhstan, promotion of the achievements of political and economic thought in the world, and in Kazakhstan, the implementation of interagency and international research collaboration.

The institute aims at creating research studies on the formation and development of the independent Republic of Kazakhstan through the prism of the policies and strategies of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Leader of the nation, and their propagation through regularly acting seminars, and scientific conferences. The Institute conducts comprehensive studies of independent Kazakhstan's foreign policy. Links are established with foreign organizations that have goals and objectives similar to The Nazarbayev Center, aimed at strengthening of international cooperation, promotion of ideas and goals of peace and sustainable development at the global level.

The main goal of the Institute is organization and conduction research and development activities on their own or in collaboration with other institutions in areas such as the preservation of peace and harmony in multi-ethnic and multi-confessional Kazakhstan, as well as promoting a model of socio-political, socio-economic and humanitarian cultural development of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

An important place is given to the coverage of international initiatives of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Leader of the nation, in the field of non-proliferation of weapons of mass destruction and the reduction of the nuclear threat, the Conference on Interaction and Confidence-Building Measures in Asia, and the Congress of Leaders of World and Traditional Religions, integration in the post-Soviet space and reformation of the global financial system.

The institute promotes historical and spiritual heritage, the preparation and publication of educational, instructional, research, educational and journalistic literature, and to the research of Nursultan Nazarbayev phenomena. The institute also assists in the organization of television programs, covering activities of The Nazarbayev Center, in scientific, theoretical, and practical conferences, symposiums, conferences, workshops in Kazakhstan and abroad, organizing translations of the works if the President Nazarbayev to different languages.

Archives and Library Service

The Archive and Library Service is a structural division of The Nazarbayev Center with nine substantive departments in the Service. In its activity the Service carries out information, educational, cultural and educational activities in order to promote the heritage of the First President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and knowledge on the history of statehood of the Republic of Kazakhstan and the Institute of Presidency of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The main task of the Service is formation of information resources of the library by collecting both domestic and foreign editions reflecting the history, theory and practice of statehood of Kazakhstan on the basis of cooperation, as well as formation of national information resource in electronic form on the history of statehood and the Institute of Presidency of the Republic of Kazakhstan, ensuring wide access to electronic funds of the library and to remote databases of domestic and foreign information resources.

Museum service

The Nazarbayev Center is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to identifying, recording, collecting, storing, studying and using cultural values, which reflect the history of statehood in Kazakhstan. The Museum contains a large collection of specimens and artifacts. The Nazarbayev Center organizes exhibitions, including photo, video and audio presentations of the Museum's materials on the history of statehood in Kazakhstan. The Museum also carries out research and cultural cooperation with Kazakh and international museums, scientific, historical and cultural institutions.

First floor

Independent Republic of Kazakhstan and its founder President Nursultan Nazarbayev

The key ideas of the exposition are the following:

  • Demonstration to Kazakhstan's and global society all the stages of the development of the sovereign state under the leadership of the 1st President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev;
  • Reflection of many-sided nature of the leader of the country who has become a significant figure in modern world community, a symbol of statehood and independence of Kazakhstan, who establishes new relations with foreign countries and consistently solves key problems on the path of liberal reformation of economy and social relations, who has also a achieved authority and high recognition of our country in the world.

The exposition consists of four main parts:

  • "President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev is a founder of the state"
  • "President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev and people"
  • "President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev is a reformer"
  • "President of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev is a world-scale leader"

Main laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan are presented in the show-windows round the hall. On the left hand-side of the hall national flag, hymn and national emblem are situated. On the right hand-side of the hall a model of Ak Orda and Bayterek are demonstrated. Also, in the exposition of the hall organized gallery of gifts to President Nazarbayev by the heads of states and delegations from different countries is presented.

Ethnographic Hall The hall of ethnography is one of the richest expositions of the museum, where different items produced by skilled craftsmen are represented. Kazakh craftsmen created masterpieces of applied art. This is an ancient art which has been passed from generation to generation. Also there is a collection of domestic utensils made of wood, metal, leather, wool as well as clothes, including variety of items depicting national life. Collection of women's silver adornments is widely exhibited here, which includes rings, bracelets, breast and hair adornments and other jewelry and amaze with their massiveness, rich decoration and original color.

A snow-white yurt, symbol of Kazakh nation, occupies central place in this hall. One of the unique exhibits of the museum displayed in the ethnographical hall is "Saukele" a wedding headdress of a bride (Mangystau region, West Kazakhstan, the first half of the 19th century).

"Kasiet" Hall The unique exhibit of clothes, different items belonging to outstanding persons of Kazakh nation, musical instruments from the collection of Sarybayev, traditional Kazakh armour and jewelry are collected in this hall. Here, the shapan of Abylai Khan, a diplomat, politician and far-sighted strategist, who strengthened the political power of Kazakh Khanate in the 18th century could be found.

The collection of the hall as well includes: camisole of Fatima Khanym (reconstruction by A.Abdubaitova), clothes of a bride (reconstruction by Zhailaubaeva), shapan of Kazybek bi, a belt "kise", which belonged to the famous wrestler of Kazakh people Baluan Sholak.

Second floor

Archeological gallery The archeological gallery reflects ancient history of Kazakhstan starting from the Stone Age up to the late Middle Ages. Different ideas about physical appearance of the Andronov people were received on the basis of the research of paleoanthropological materials of the Bronze Age. Archeological gallery presents anthropological-archeological exhibit of the "Andronov woman" (18-9 cc. BC) in her scientifically and authentically reconstructed clothes with ornaments. The author of this project is famous archeologist Akishev, under leadership of whom in the 1980s a variety of researches of the Bronze Age were carried out.

The 6th century is known as a beginning of a new period in the development of the statehood connected with creation of the first Eurasian Empire Turkic Kaganate including territory of our country. In the Middle Ages (9-12cc) Kazakhstan became one of the largest centers of urban civilization. As a result of archeological works the unique materials about ancient urban culture and life of two thousand years period has been collected.

From ancient times Taraz has been one of the remarkable cities of Kazakhstan. It has been a place of settled culture with glorious monuments of architectural art. Taraz has reached the greatest blossoming in the 11-12 cc. during the reign of Karakhanid dynasty. At this time the number of mints increases. The coins "dirhems" are displayed in the show-windows of the hall

The Ancient World Hall "Ancient world" hall presents complex of unique exhibits of antiquity. The Issyk burial mound (5c. BC) is considered to be the largest archeological monuments of the Saka period, which has been discovered by the group of scientists under the leadership of Kazakhstani archeologist and historian Akishev in 50 km to the East from Almaty city in 1969. The Saka warrior (4-3cc BC) in ceremonial clothes was buried in this mound. The quality of the processing of his gold things testifies that the Saka masters had good skills of such types of work with metal as sculptural casting, high-relief and base-relief stamping, embossing and engraving. It makes the unique finding one of the samples of the world level.

In 1999 archeological expedition under the leadership of Samashev discovered a unique burial place-the mound of Berel, located close to Berel village in Katon-Karagay region of East Kazakhstan. The Saka chieftain living in 4-3 cc. BC was buried in the mound. Along with the chieftain 13 mummified horses of chestnut colour were buried there, four of them had leather masks, decorated with wooden horns of mountain goats, covered with leather and gold.

Another remarkable exhibit of the "Ancient World" hall is the anthropologic-archeological reconstruction of the Sarmatian chieftain (3-2 cc. BC) (Altynbekov's reconstruction). All the clothes of the chieftain living many centuries ago was richly inlaid with gold metal plates and plates of various configuration that enabled the scientists to declare as the finding the second "Gold Man" in Kazakhstan.

"The world of Kazakhs" Hall The hall exposition "The world of Kazakhs" presents the private collection of the state and public figure of the Republic of Kazakhstan, mayor of Astana city Imangali Tasmagambetov. The collection which has been gathered during twenty years represents the rare and unique masterpieces of graphic and craft art of Kazakhstan. Majority of them is dated to 18-20 cc. and includes variety of national culture artifacts belonging to earlier periods of the history of Kazakhs. The collection consists of various jewelry and adornments, belts for men and women, military equipment and armour, woman's headdresses and musical instruments. Each exhibit is unique in its own way, but female jewelry is the most notable.

Third floor

Historical Gallery The historical gallery reflects the long period of development of the statehood on the territory of Kazakhstan beginning from the late Middle Ages up to 1986. The exposition space is divided into following stages:

  • The Kazakh Khanate in 15-17 cc
  • History and culture of Kazakhstan in second half of the 19 c. – beginning of 20 c.
  • The political position of the Kazakh society at the beginning of 20 c.
  • National liberation movement, the Soviet period

Each exhibit of historical gallery bears the impress of that time and reminds different events: centuries-old struggle of Kazakh people for the independence, feat of arms of the heroes, the tragic events which have taken away the lives of many our predecessors.

Fourth floor

Independent Kazakhstan Gallery The exhibition on the 4th floor is devoted to religion, Islam and Orthodoxy. The main goal of the exhibition is to show the role of President of the Republic of Kazakhstan in the formation of integrity and unity of multinational and interethnic people of the independent, sovereign, democratic state of the Republic of Kazakhstan. The exhibition consist of 100 exhibits from the funds of the Museum. The unique books in the Arabian language, Koran, rare icons and originals of icon with foldable side flaps, a censer and candlesticks are of great interest.

"Astana: the Past and the Present" Gallery exposition "Astana: the Past and the Present" presents exhibits which are reflecting formation and strengthening of the independent Republic of Kazakhstan, development of Astana, the young capital of the state. Nowadays Astana is the first of all, symbol of independency of the country. A city with bright events of a new epoch, rapid development, where progress is reached by common efforts and people are living in peace and harmony.

Despite of being a young capital, Astana has very rich history. Archeological findings of ancient settlement Bozok, historical documents, photos, life subjects, utensils, clothes and many other exhibits of the gallery transfer the visitors to the past of the Astana city, give chance to see former shape of the city and then, having returned to the present to understand, how much our city has changed.

Fifth floor

Art Gallery The Art Gallery demonstrates the works of well-known Kazakhstan masters of brush and arts and crafts, the products of which are familiar not only among art connoisseurs of Kazakhstan, but also many other countries of the world.

The modern fine arts of Kazakhstan have connected achievements of artists of past years. The artists in the creativity masterfully playing with the colours create images of the habitual world of history, laws of the nature and the orders of things.

The gallery presents the works of such well-known artists, masters of fine arts as K.Mullashev, G.Telgoziyev, E.Tolepbay, M.Kalimov, A.Duzelhanov, B.Zaurbekov and others. The art gallery constantly replenishes with new works of artists not only from Kazakhstan but from CIS countries thanks to exhibitions which are held on significant dates and events.

The service of storage, restoration and preservation of the museum funds

The service of the account, storage, restoration and preservation of the museum is independent structural division of The Nazarbayev Center. The service consists of three departments including department of funds accounting, department of funds storage and restoration department.

Three funds included in the service have an important significance, "Independent Kazakhstan and its founder President Nursultan Nazarbayev" fund, archeology fund, fund of written sources and material culture.

The Service also operates three sectors, a restoration sector of goods from metal, wood, leather and bone, sector for paintings, drawings and ceramics restoration, sector restoration of materials and carpet-felt products.

The Sector of the restoration of paintings, drawings and ceramics carries out restoration of oil painting, mixed painting techniques, graphics, porcelain and earthenware, also ceramics (archaeological items and household items), paper (restoration of written sources and photos, mat making, restoration of books).

The Sector of restoration restores leather, bone, and metal. During the restoration also carried out technical work: welding, turning, casting, molding, sanding, as well as work with chemicals.

Sector of the restoration of the materials and carpet products, is done by hands and machine restoration, computer embroidery, restoration of rarities, production of souvenirs, sewing slipcovers, sewing different products.

Funds have the following directions, which are provision of strict state accounting of the museum funds of The Nazarbayev Center, ensuring its legal protection and creating conditions for studying and rational use of museum values. The organization of the secondary state account and ensuring safety of museum values, identification of the museum subjects and the museum collections, directed on systematic replenishment (acquisition) of funds by profile. Studying and preservation of historical and cultural monuments, promotion and dissemination of knowledge about them.

Expository, excursion and exhibition security service

Expository, excursion and exhibition security service is an independent structural division of the Center. The service includes three departments including expository department, excursion departments and exhibition security department. The main function of the expository department is creation of the scientific exposition, organization and holding of exhibitions, including abroad, reception and expository of exhibitions organized by specialized agencies and foreign organizations, organization of joint exhibitions with similar institutions, museums, libraries, research and educational centers.

Excursion department of The Nazarbayev Centre has been organizing educational and thematic excursions for children and studying youth which support realization of educational programs for many years. The department is intended to exercise popularization of ethnographic culture and history of Kazakhstan through excursions conducted in Kazakh, Russian, English, German, Chinese and Turkic languages. The main activity of the department is to conduct research and education, museum and educational and cultural work.

In addition, the main course of work of the department includes preparation of guidelines and texts on topics of museum exhibitions and fairs, realization of excursions programs, organization of tours, lectures, exhibitions and events at the museum.
