Nickel boride (disambiguation)
Nickel boride is a generic name for any chemical compound of nickel and boron, with the general chemical formula NixBy.[1][2]
Boron-rich nickel borides are paramagnetic while nickel-rich boride compounds are soft ferromagnets.[2]
Nickel borides can be synthesized by reacting the elements at high temperature (necessary due to the high melting point of boron). Ni
3B is synthesized at 1000 °C, Ni
2Bat 1200 °C and Ni
4B
3 at 750–900 °C.[2] Other synthesis methods include ball milling of the elements and boronizing of pure nickel.
"Nickel boride" is also the common name for a nickel boride catalyst of approximate bulk composition Ni2.5B.
Proper nickel borides include:
- Nickel diboride NiB
2. Prepared by reduction of nickel iodide with sodium borohydride in tetrahydrofuran.[2] - NiB[3]
- Dinickel boride Ni2B.
- Trinickel boride Ni3B.
