Night of the Kings

Night of the Kings (French: La Nuit des rois) is a drama film, directed by Philippe Lacôte and released in 2020.[2] The film is a coproduction of companies from France, Côte d'Ivoire, Canada and Senegal. It was selected as the Ivorian entry for the Best International Feature Film at the 93rd Academy Awards.[3]

The film's cast also includes Isaka Sawadogo, Steve Tientcheu, Rasmané Ouédraogo, Abdoul Karim Konaté, Laetitia Ky and Denis Lavant.[2]

Announced in 2017 under the working title Zama King,[4] the film premiered at the 77th Venice International Film Festival,[2] with a follow-up screening at the 2020 Toronto International Film Festival.[5] AT TIFF, it was named a winner of the Amplify Voices award.[6]

Synopsis

A young pickpocket (Bakary Koné) is sent to the MACA prison in Abidjan. To survive, he will have to compel the other prisoners with his storytelling.[2]

Release

Neon acquired the US rights to the film in September 2020.[7]

Night of the Kings will be released in theaters and in virtual cinemas on February 26, 2021, and on video on demand on March 5, 2021.[8][9]

Critical reception

The review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes assigns the film a 98% fresh rating based on 41 critics, with an average rating of 7.60/10. Its critical consensus reads, "A restless and riveting fable, Night of Kings sees writer-director Philippe Lacôte in full command of his craft."[10]

Metacritic assigns Night of the Kings an average score of 83 out of 100 based on 11 critics, indicating "critical acclaim".[11]
