Pablo César

Pablo César (born 26 February 1962) is a Argentine filmmaker.[1][2] He has contributed to the African cinema by making the critically acclaimed films, Equinox, the Garden of the Roses, Los dioses de agua and Aphrodite, the Garden of the Perfumes.[3]

Personal life

He was born on 26 February 1962 in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He is a professor at the Fundación Universidad del Cine Buenos Aires since 1992.[4]

Career

At the age of 6, César began to make comics. Then at the age of 10, he wrote and printed his first newsletter. He later sold it at his primary school, Champagnat College. In 1975 his older brother José María, gave him a video recorder that he used intensively. Then in 1977, he wrote the script and made his maiden short film. Meanhile in 1980, he was awarded the first prize in the "Experimental" category in the Rosario Foto-Cine Ateneo contest for his short film Del génesis. The short film also obtained the mention for Best Editing and Third Prize (without category) in the Círculo de Mar del Plata filmmakers and a Special Mention from UNCIPAR. In 1983, he made the film De las caras de los espejos and the film won the First Prize of UNICA, the International Amateur Film Union in the same year.[4]

He is well known as the pioneer in film co-productions between several countries with Argentina such as Tunisia, Mali, Benin, Angola, Ethiopia, India and Namibia. In 1991, he made the critically acclaimed film Equinox, the Garden of the Roses with Tunisia. Then in 1996, he collaborated with India to make Unicorn, the Garden of the Fruits. In 1998, he made the film Aphrodite, the Garden of the Perfumes as a co-production with Mali.[4]

He also included in the jury panels of several international film festivals including, Amiens (France), Montreal Young Film Festival (Canada), Kelibia (Tunisia), Huy (Belgium), Hyderabad (India), FESPACO (Burkina Faso), and Villa Carlos Paz.[4] In 2012, he was part of the delegation that accompanied Argentine President Cristina Kirchner to Angola. Then under the framework of the cultural cooperation agreement signed by both governments, César directed the film The Water Gods, cited as the first cinema co-production between Argentina and Angola.[5][6]

In 2018, he directed the film Pensando en él.[7] The film revolves around the relationship between the Nobel-winning Indian poet Rabindranath Tagore and the Argentine writer Victoria Ocampo, during the former's visit to Buenos Aires in the 1920s.[8]
