Princess Khutulun (novel)
Princess Khutulun (Mongolian: Хотол Цагаан Гүнж) is a historical romance by Mongolian author Baatarsuren Shuudertsetseg. Blending historical facts with magical realism, the story follows the eventful life of Khutulun (born as Ayurug), the great great granddaughter of Genghis Khan. First published in 2017, it was the author’s fourteenth book.[1] The novel and it’s 2018 sequel Khutulun: The Legend Of The Hills are the basis of an upcoming Mongolian feature film Princess Khutulun.[2]

Plot
When Queen Shabkana, mother of Khaidu Khan, delivers her premature and near stillborn granddaughter, she decides to nurture her back to health, names her Ayurug (Moonlight), and raises her as her own. Ayurug grows to become a strong and independent girl. To gain her father’s approval, she trains with other young boys, mastering wrestling and archery and eventually besting the others in a competition. As her reputation as the "Wrestling Princess" spreads, she is renamed Khutulun. At 13, the grandmother who raised her suddenly disappears and she’s left to be raised with her 13 brothers. Owing to her advanced military skills, she is chosen to pursue thieves, dispatched by Kublai Khan’s son Nomukhan, who have stolen the Golden Book inherited from Ögedei Khan. Khutulun successfully retrieves the Golden Book and as a reward is granted the right to choose whom to marry. She ends up marrying a mere soldier, Abatai.
