Ride Like a Girl

Ride Like a Girl is a 2019 Australian biographical sports drama film directed by Rachel Griffiths[4] in her feature film directing debut and starring Teresa Palmer and Sam Neill. It is based on the true story of Michelle Payne, the first female jockey to win the Melbourne Cup in 2015.[5][6][7]

Plot

Michelle Payne is the youngest of ten children of racehorse trainer Paddy Payne. Almost all of Paddy's children grow up to become jockeys and this is the story of the youngest daughter. Payne became the first woman to ride the winner of the Melbourne Cup in 2015.

Payne won the Melbourne Cup on 3 November 2015, riding Prince of Penzance, a six-year-old gelding with which she had a long-term association.[8][9]

As of October 2020, 68% of the 37 reviews compiled on Rotten Tomatoes are positive, with an average rating of 6.56/10. The website's critics consensus reads: "Ride Like a Girl is far from the subtlest inspirational drama, but its fact-based story and charming cast are just enough to guide it down the stretch."[3] On Metacritic, the film has a weighted average score of 47 out of 100, based on 6 critics, indicating "mixed or average reviews".[10]
