Rik Kuethe

Frederik Philip Kuethe (1 February 1942 - 19 March 2020 in The Hague) was a Dutch diplomat, journalist and writer.[1] He worked for the Dutch Ministry of Foreign Affairs from 1970 to 1985, after which he joined the weekly magazine Elsevier as a journalist.

Early life

Kuethe was born in Laren, North Holland. After high school in Hilversum (1953-1960), Kuethe studied law at the Leiden University, where he was a member of the Leiden Student Corps Virtus Concordia Fides, nowadays LSV Minerva .

In 1960 Kuethe reached the front page of the Dutch national newspaper De Telegraaf.[2]

After graduating in law (November 1966), Kuethe did an internship at the European Economic Community (EEC) in Brussels (January-May 1967).

Career as diplomat

He worked from May 1967 to May 1969 at the International Labour Organization regional office of the United Nations in Lagos (Nigeria).

Career as Elsevier journalist

On 16 august 1985 he started working for the Dutch magazine Elsevier. He wrote articles of other countries and interviewed many foreign heads of state, politicians and diplomats.[3] Later he specialized in the United States. In 1994 he received a weekly column, Short American, which ran until 2009.
