Rosalie A. Reed

Rosalie A. Reed (born 1945) is an American veterinarian. In 1973, Reed became the first woman to work as a vet at the Los Angeles Zoo. She was also the first African American to become a vet at a major United States zoo.

Biography

Reed was born in 1945 in Mt. Vernon, New York.[1][2] As a young girl, she was always interested in animals.[2] In 1972, she graduated from the Tuskegee Institute.[1] Reed worked her way through college and specialized in exotic animals at Tuskegee.[2] She was also a member of the rifle club in college.[3]

In 1973, Reed was hired by the Los Angeles Zoo, becoming the first woman to work as a veterinarian at the zoo and the first African American to work at a major zoo in the United States.[1][4] At the zoo, she cared for 2,635 different kinds of animals.[2] She was also involved in California condor rehabilitation at the zoo.[4]
