Shamim Haider Tirmazi
Shamim Haider Tirmazi is a Pakistani scholar, researcher, teacher and writer who taught education at the University of Education for 36 years.

Tirmazi conducted significant research on standardized testing in Pakistan and published several books of literary criticism and humor.
Early life and education
Shamim Haider Tirmazi was born in a small town of India. His father, Syed Baqar Ali, a civil servant, transferred his family to Sahiwal in what is now Pakistan in early 1940s. Tirmazi completed his education – primary to F. Sc. (1956) in Sahiwal city. Tirmazi started his professional career as untrained science teacher in 1956. He served at two high schools (269 E.B Burewala and 40/3-R Okara) from Dec 1956 to September 1958.
He passed his B.A. examination in 1958 as a private candidate.
After winning a silver medal in B.Ed. examination, he was assigned to Central Model school, Lahore (Sept 1959 to Sept 1960).
Tirmazi was admitted to the B.Ed. class at Central Training College in Lahore and secured second position in Punjab in 1959. Tirmazi received his M.Ed degree from the Institute of Education and Research at Punjab University, Lahore in 1961.
Career
In September 1961. Tirmazi began teaching at the Government Pilot Secondary School, Wahdat Colony, Lahore. In September 1963, he was appointed as a lecturer at the Government Training College, Multan (now University of Education ) In 1984, while still at University of Education Tirmazi went to Australia on a UNESCO Fellowship.
In 1991, Tirmazi received his Ph.D. degree in Education from B.Z.University Multan, Pakistan in 1991. Tirmazi retired as associate professor from University of Education in Sept 1999.
After retirement, Tirmazi received a contract to teach at B.Z. University Multan. He has been associated with the department of Education of the University, teaching Research and Assessment to M.A., M.Phil. and Ph.D. classes from 1999 to 2017
Publications
- Tirmazi's Ph.D. Thesis, "A historical study of the determinants and Evolution of Islamic education system" was published in 1993. The title of the book was ‘Islam ka Nizam-i-Taaleem’.
- Two books on literary criticism ‘Adab Aasaar’ and ‘Adab aur Asar’ were published in 1996 and 2010 .
- Three books on humor - Phoowar (Light essays), Hanste Bolte Lafz (Social Columns), and Mein aur Merey (Personal Sketches) were published in 1986, 2003 and 2004 respectively. In 2014, these three books were published in the form of an ‘Omni edition’ with the title "Shaguftani".
Tirmazi published many articles on education and Urdu literature magazines and newspapers in Pakistan.
Research
- M. Ed. Thesis entitled "construction of a Semi-standardized Test of Reading Comprehension in English for 8-10 classes" (Group Study) under the supervision of Dr Boyd McCandless (1960–61) was completed at I.E.R. Lahore, Pakistan.
- Ph. D. Thesis entitled ‘A historical study of the determinants and Evolution of Islamic Education system’ (1991) under the supervision of Dr M. A. Aziz, was submitted to the Department of Education, Multan, Pakistan.
- Research project entitled "Development and Rasch Analysis of a Semi- Standardized Test of Maths for class 8th was submitted to the Department of Education, W.A.C.A.E. Perth, Australia (1984).
- Ten theses of Ph.D. Education Scholars from different universities of Pakistan, were supervised by Tirmazi.
- Theses of M. Phil. and M.A./M. Ed. Students, supervised by Tirmazi, are in great number.
Achievements
- First Research project on Test-Standardization in Education, submitted to obtain M. Ed. Degree from I.E.R. Lahore.
- First Ph. D. education thesis, submitted to the Department of Education, B.Z. University, Multan, Pakistan.
- Contribution regarding introduction and application of Rasch Model of Item – analysis in the field of Educational Testing in Pakistan through conducting and then supervising many researches on the Latent Model at M.A., M. Phil. and Ph. D. levels.
- First prize on the Urdu language book "Hanste Bolte Lafz" awarded by the Board of Intermediate and Secondary Education, Multan in connection with the competition among Teacher-Writers of Southern Punjab (2003–04).
- Six M.A. / M.Phil. students from different Universities of Pakistan, wrote their Theses on 'Life and Works of Tirmazi'
