History
The origins of St. Francis Hospital can be traced back to 1922, when Carlos W. Munson, a wealthy Flower Hill resident and the heir to the Munson Steamship Company - along with his wife, Mabel, gave this 15-acre parcel of their property to the Franciscan Missionaries of Mary.[2][3][4] The Franciscan Missionaries soon opened a covent here on this land, and used it as a camp for poor and chronically-ill children from New York City.[3][4]
In 1937, the Franciscan Missionaries learned that 2% of Brooklyn schoolchildren suffering from rheumatic heart conditions needed charitable healthcare assistance.[5] As a result, they transformed the facility into a cardiac sanatorium for children.[3][5]
By 1941, St. Francis featured 125 beds, held children between 6 and 16 years of age, and the average stay was 8 months.[5]
In 1954, St. Francis Hospital expanded their operations to care for adults in addition to children.[4]
By 1973, the hospital had grown to feature 227 beds and 5 operating rooms.
After Avianca Flight 52 crashed on January 25, 1990 in Cove Neck, located a few miles to the east, St. Francis Hospital was one of several area hospitals that took in and cared for passengers injured in the crash.[6]
In 2012, St. Francis Hospital renovated their emergency room, expanding it and making it more energy-efficient.[7]
