Steve Hanft
Steven Hanft (May 3, 1966) is a film and video director. He is best known for directing several videos for Beck, most notably "Loser" and "Where It's At", the latter of which won the MTV Video Music Award for Best Male Video in 1996.
Early life
Steven Hanft was born in Ventura, California where he started making films at age eleven.
He studied film at CalArts,[1] where he made his first feature film, Kill the Moonlight.
Career
Steven Hanft is a writer/director known for original films and music videos. In 2001, Hanft released his second feature film Southlander at South by Southwest. The film, featuring cameos by Mark Gonzales, Beck, Hank Williams III, Billy Higgins, Elliott Smith, and Royal Trux was shot in two weeks.[2] In 2008, he released his third feature film, a music documentary Return of the Rub-a-Dub Style, about the original sound system reggae artists performing in Los Angeles. The film screened at Anthology Film Archive in New York, and Don't Knock the Rock Film Festival, in Los Angeles,[3] and was released to DVD in 2011 on the [4] Stones Throw Records website and Ernie B's Reggae site.[5]
Recently, Steven directed music videos for Ben Kweller, and Prince Jazzbo.[6][7] He also produced and starred in the Cannes Film Festival award winning short film Sunglass Catch, rated by Business Insider as the 4th most important YouTube video ever.[8]
