Supa Modo

Supa Modo is a 2018 internationally co-produced drama film directed by Likarion Wainaina.[1] It first premiered at 68th Berlin International Film Festival.[2] It was selected as the Kenyan entry for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 91st Academy Awards, but it was not nominated.[3][4]

Plot

Jo is a young girl living in a small village in Kenya. It's her dream to become a super-heroine, but unfortunately these ambitions are hindered by her impending terminal illness. As an attempt to make her desires possible the whole village is plotting a genius plan with the goal to make her wish come true.

Background

Supa Modo was produced as part of the One Fine Day Films workshop-project, which gives African filmmakers the opportunity to learn from mentors and create their stories for an international audience.[5] The project was founded by Tom Tykwer and Marie Steinmann. Other movies resulting from said workshops include Kati Kati, Nairobi Half Life, Something Necessary and Soul Boy.[6]

Festivals

The movie had its world premiere at the 68th Berlin International Film Festival in the category "Generations".

Controversy

In a series of Tweets posted on 10 June 2020, Silas Miami one of the Film's writers, highlighted the seemingly questionable terms for actors and crew on the Supa Modo movie set. The thread detailing stories from his experiences and those of his colleagues ignited the trend #KECreativesDeserveBetter that opened up the conversation of the structures of Filmmaking in Kenya. In a detailed Facebook post, the film's directed Likarion Wainaina echoed the sentiments by Miami expressing the contradictory image of success during the Supa Modo's tour to Film Festivals including the New York International Children's Film Festival with no additional financial gain for the movie creators as stipulated by terms of agreement prior to production. Ginger Ink has yet to give an official statement on the matter.
