The Invisible Hook: The Hidden Economics of Pirates is a non-fiction book by economist Peter Leeson that shows how the modern economic concept of mutual self-interest motivated pirates to form cooperative and democratic societies that preceded the origins of modern-day democracy.[1][2][3]

In June of 2020, Youtuber CGP Grey adapted the book into two YouTube animations, including ideas from the book and how pirates kill out of a desire to make an example of rather than out of personal malice to quote the video.[4]
