The Monopoly of Violence (French: Un pays qui se tient sage, lit. 'A country that stands wise') is a 2020 French documentary film directed by David Dufresne.

Subject matter
The film question the enforcement of order in France and the legitimacy of the State's use of violence and especially police brutality in France.[3][4][5][6]
The context is clash between the police and demonstrators during the yellow vests movement. The film use videos made by demonstrators or independent journalists between November 2018 and February 2020.
The images are discussed in a series of dialogues between personalities of social movements, intellectuals and police officers.[7]
Those two-way discussions allow to interpret the raw images using fundamental concept such as the monopoly of the legitimate use of physical force.[8]
