Thomas J. Nasca

Thomas Joseph Nasca (born 1949) is the President and CEO of Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education and the Chair of the Board of Directors for ACGME-International, Inc. Nasca is also Professor of Medicine and Molecular Physiology and Biophysics at Thomas Jefferson University and Senior Scholar, Department of Education, College of Medicine, University of Illinois at Chicago.[1][2]

Early life

Thomas Joseph Nasca was born in White Plains, New York to Agnes and Thomas Gaetano Nasca.[3] Nasca attended University of Notre Dame and graduated in 1971 with high honors. In 1975 Nasca graduated from Jefferson Medical College earning his medical degree.[4] Nasca was part of the Alpha Omega Alpha fraternity at Jefferson Medical College. Nasca completed his internship and residency in Pennsylvania. He was also Chief Medical Resident, Internal Medicine at UPMC from 1978-1979. Nasca completed his nephrology fellowship at Brown University and Rhode Island Hospital.[5][6]

Career and leadership

In 1992 Nasca joined Jefferson Medical College and Thomas Jefferson University Hospital as the vice chairman of the department of medicine.[7] In 1993 Nasca became the residency program director at Thomas Jefferson University.[8] Joseph S. Gonnella, dean of Jefferson Medical College, resigned in 2001 making Nasca the acting dean.[9] Nasca became the senior vice president for academic affairs and dean of Jefferson Medical College in 2003.[10][11] Nasca left Jefferson Medical College in 2007 to become CEO and executive director of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education in Chicago.[12][13] While Nasca was the dean at Thomas Jefferson University and the CEO of ACGME he wrote over 100 peer-reviewed articles and other publications.[14] The Commonwealth Medical College awarded Nasca with an honorary Doctor Medical Arts degree in July 2016. In May 2018 Nasca was the commencement speaker for the Georgetown University School of Medicine class of 2018.[15]

In March 2020 Nasca and the board of the ACGME suspended self-study activities, all accreditation site visits and CLER program site visits due to the COVID-19 pandemic.[16]
