UOW College Hong Kong

UOW College Hong Kong (UOWCHK) is part of the global network of the University of Wollongong (UOW) in Australia, one of the world’s top 200 universities. Its heritage stems from the Community College of City University (CCCU),[1] established in 2004 under the City University of Hong Kong (CityU), which has a long history of providing higher education to the Hong Kong community. [2]

UOWCHK / CCCU Telford Annex Campus

In 2014, CityU partnered with University of Wollongong (UOW) and the college was renamed to UOWCHK in 2020. The medium of instruction is mainly English with some courses supplemented by Cantonese.

History

Establishment

After the discontinuation of fund by the University Grants Committee (UGC) for most of the associate degree Programmes of City University of Hong Kong in 2004, the Community College of City University was established and providing various associate degree Programmes.[3]

Alliance With University of Wollongong

On 21 November 2014, The University of Wollongong (UOW) and CityU announced their partnership in accordance with the press release of both of the institutions.[4][5] The college was then renamed to UOWCHK / CCCU. In July 2020, the college was renamed as UOWCHK after being removed by CityU.

There were several concerns from the staff and students of UOWCHK/CCCU for example, the employment of the staff and the accreditation of the current associate degree programmes after the transferral from UOWCHK/CCCU to UOW. It was said that within the first 5 years of the transitional period, all the employment terms and conditions will be remained the same, all the current programmes will be continued in both the Main Campus and Telford Annex and students can continue to enjoy the facilities provided by CityU.[6]

Campuses

There are 2 campuses of UOWCHK including the Main Campus (for year 2 students only)and the Telford Annex. Before the opening of Academic 2, most of the programmes took place in Academic 1. Other programmes (about 1,600 students) take place in the Telford Annex.[7]

Main campus

The Main Campus of UOWCHK which serves the current year 2 students (not year 1 students 2020-2021) is located in Academic 2 of City University of Hong Kong. It is close to the MTR Kowloon Tong station of the East Rail line and Kwun Tong line. The main campus is also connected to the Festival Walk.

Year 1 Students (2020-2021) of the main campus are no longer eligible to use all the facilities of City University of Hong Kong Kowloon Tong Campus including lecture theatres, classrooms, laboratories, sports facilities, Computing Service Centre and the Run Run Shaw Library etc.

Telford Annex

The Telford Annex is located in Telford Plaza, Kowloon Bay. It is close to MTR Kowloon Bay station and connected to the Telford Plaza. The Telford Campus has specially designed facilities ideal for teaching and learning. It has Lecture Theatres, Group Study Rooms as well as regular classrooms, on-site Computer Laboratories with printing services that are open to students at designated periods. Notebook computers are available for loan to students for their use on campus, while all students can stay connected on campus with wireless LAN.

All students attending classes at the Telford Campus have access to the Telford library, which provides easy access to textbooks, periodicals and library materials. Online facilities are available for connection to the electronic resources of the University of Wollongong Library

Main campus

Students in the Main Campus can enjoy various services with a fee for example the general clinic and dental clinic of the Health Centre and facilities provided by CityU.

Telford Annex

Students in the Telford Annex are not eligible to become the members of the Students' Union of CityU but there are several societies such as Aviation Society for students studying Airport Operations and Aviation Logistics. Other services like clinical services and fitness room are provided by off-campus service providers. For example, the fitness room of Telford Recreation Club.
