West Campus High School

West Campus High School is a public college preparatory magnet high school in Sacramento, California.[5] The school serves around 800 students in grades 9–12 in the Sacramento City Unified School District. It was founded as a satellite high school of the nearby Hiram W. Johnson High School in 1983, under the name Hiram Johnson West Campus, and separated from Hiram Johnson in the year 2000.[6] West Campus is known for sending the most graduates to college, and has been recognized for doing so by the Sacramento Bee in 2019.[7]

Clubs

West Campus has more than thirty clubs and organizations. Among these are Body Improvement Club, Christ Kidz, Debate Club, Girls Who Code, Key Club, Well-Bean Club, Feminist Coalition, Interact, Chinese Culture Club, Folklorico Club, California Scholarship Federation, Mathletes, and many others that allows students to spend some times with activities that interest them, whether new or old.[8] One major student organization includes Associated Student Body (ASB) where a group of elected students worked together to create a better community at West Campus by leading a variety of events such as rallies and dances.[9]

Class colors

At West Campus High School, each class is assigned a different color that is used during rallies to represent themselves. The freshman class color at West Campus is traditionally yellow. When the freshman class promotes to their sophomore year, they take on the color of the senior class that graduated from the previous year, which is repeated yearly. The other colors that are used by the other upper classes include green, red, and blue, which would stayed with them until the year they graduate from West Campus. Currently, the class of 2023 has the color green, the class of 2022 has blue, and the class of 2021 has red.

Sports

There are a total of 18 sports that take place over the seasons of Fall, Winter, and Spring.[10] A few sports at West Campus include cheer, golf, soccer, basketball, cross country, track, baseball, softball, volleyball, wrestling, swim, and tennis. The high school has four soccer teams, four basketball teams, two baseball teams, two softball teams, and several volleyball teams.[11] With students working hard to keep up on their studies and practice their extracurricular activities, many of them have received recognition of their work such that as an individual or with a team in numerous competitions and championships. [12]

Music

The West Campus music department consists of a music appreciation program, a marching band, a drumline, and a color guard.[13] These groups are affiliated with the Northern California Band Association.[14]

Awards

West Campus has an Academic Performance Index score of 902.[15] In 2007, West Campus High School shared the California Distinguished School Award with a few hundred other schools.[16] Alongside this West Campus has a national ranking of #164 out of 17,792 high schools throughout the nation, gaining a scorecard of 99.08 and ranking #1 in the Sacramento Metro Area and in the Sacramento City Unified Schools. Continuing with their academic successes, in 2020, West Campus had jumped drastically from state rankings of #32 to #19 in all of California High Schools within one year from the help of both staffs and students, according to U.S. News.[17]
